‘Darkroom’ portrays a cross-over of the existence of two mediums, between analog and digital realms, in the same space. Derived from a movement through a chemical process of a conventional analog film development in a darkroom, a series of analog images (film photographs taken by Peechana Chayochaichana) undergo a dynamic transformation portrayed through the use of particles.
As users manipulate the particle system while weaving through this interactive canvas, their particles interweave as a darkroom’s chemical substance and eventually, become a part of the photograph itself. Through this artistic representation, the interactive visual merges a tendency of imperfection, slowness from a human touch, and the stripped-down simplicity of an analog process into a complex digital realm.
The image particles are generated through Image scrub from the file of analog images. Using a Kinect to track the participants’ body movement, their point clouds transform into the turbulence value to manipulate the motion of the image particles. After a period of time, the image particles then slowly turns from negative colour into coloured pixels.
